16th-Century Oak Beam Underpinning & Limecrete Floor

16th-Century Oak Beam Underpinning & Limecrete Floor

Breathing New Life into a Heritage Home

This Welsh home had already been lovingly restored by its owners with authentic heritage materials—including renewed lime pointing both inside and out. Build Wales was brought in to address a massive 16th-century oak beam that spanned the length of the main room, effectively holding up the house. Working in close collaboration with a structural engineer, we approached the underpinning with a light touch to preserve both the beam’s structural integrity and historical value.

We also added underfloor heating and filled the room with a breathable limecrete slab using Ty-Mawr Lime materials from Brecon. Finished with a polished coat of NHL5, the floor gained a subtle, marble-like sheen, combining modern comfort with authentic, breathable construction. Outside, we upgraded the property’s drainage, and inside, we ensured plumbing was ready for a new bathroom installation.

Build Wales takes pride in delivering expert heritage restorations and modern builds throughout Wales, bringing integrity, commitment, and excellence to every project.
